Kahuku, Hawaii

Kahuku is a census-designated place (CDP) in the Koolauloa District on the island of Oahu, County of Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. In the Hawaiian language, ka huku means "the projection", presumably a reference to Kahuku Point nearby, the northernmost point of land on the island of Oahu.[1] As of the 2010 Census, Kahuku had a population of 2,614.[2]

Kahuku is located at 21°40′49″N 157°57′1″W / 21.68028°N 157.95028°W / 21.68028; -157.95028.[3] This community is located northwest from Laie and east from Kuilima and Kawela Bay along Kamehameha Highway (Route 83).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), of which 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2) is land and 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2) is water. The total area is 57.46% water, the Pacific Ocean lying off the coast in the census tract.

Keauhou, Hawaii

Keauhou (also spelled Keauhoa or Keauhua) is an unincorporated community on the island of Hawaii in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States. Its elevation is 13 feet (4 m). Because the community has borne multiple names, the Board on Geographic Names officially designated it "Keauhou" in 1914.[1] Although it is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 96739.[2] The post office is a contract station only;[3] people who live in the community use the zip code of 96740 or 96725.[4]

Historic areas near Keauhou include Keauhou Bay, where Kamehameha III was born, Kahaluu Bay directly North, and Ahu A Umi Heiau in the uplands.[5] The Keauhou Holua Slide is a National Historic Landmark.[6] The post office and a small museum are located in the Keauhou Shopping Center.[7]

Makawao, Hawaii

Makawao is a census-designated place (CDP) in Maui County, Hawaiʻi, United States. The population was 7,184 at the 2010 census.[1] Located on the rural northwest slope of Haleakala on East Maui, the community is known for being the hub of the "Upcountry", a part of the island dominated by mostly agriculture and ranch land.

As of the census of 2000,[4] there were 6,327 people, 2,151 households, and 1,565 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,353.8 people per square mile (523.1/km²). There were 2,222 housing units at an average density of 475.5 per square mile (183.7/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 40.54% White, 0.32% African American, 0.55% Native American, 17.04% Asian, 8.74% Pacific Islander, 1.56% from other races, and 31.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.93% of the population.

There were 2,151 households out of which 41.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 14.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 17.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.94 and the average family size was 3.34.

Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor is a lagoon harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, west of Honolulu. It has been long visited by the Naval fleet of the United States, before it was acquired from the Hawaiian Kingdom by the U.S. with the signing of the Reciprocity Treaty of 1875. Much of the harbor and surrounding lands is now a United States Navy deep-water naval base. It is also the headquarters of the United States Pacific Fleet. The U.S. government first obtained exclusive use of the inlet and the right to maintain a repair and coaling station for ships here in 1887.[1] The attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan on December 7, 1941, was the immediate cause of the United States' entry into World War II.[2][3][4]

Pearl Harbor was originally an extensive shallow embayment called Wai Momi (meaning, “Waters of Pearl”)[5] or Puʻuloa (meaning, “long hill”) by the Hawaiians. Puʻuloa was regarded as the home of the shark goddess, Kaʻahupahau, and her brother (or son), Kahiʻuka, in Hawaiian legends. According to tradition, Keaunui, the head of the powerful Ewa chiefs, is credited with cutting a navigable channel near the present Puʻuloa saltworks, by which he made the estuary, known as "Pearl River," accessible to navigation. Making due allowance for legendary amplification, the estuary already had an outlet for its waters where the present gap is; but Keaunui is typically given the credit for widening and deepening it.[6]

During the early 19th century, Pearl Harbor was not used for large ships due to its shallow entrance. The interest of United States in the Hawaiian Islands grew as a result of its whaling, shipping and trading activity in the Pacific. As early as 1820, an "Agent of the United States for Commerce and Seamen" was appointed to look after American business in the Port of Honolulu. These commercial ties to the American continent were accompanied by the work of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. American missionaries and their families became an integral part of the Hawaiian political body.

American Hi-Fi

American Hi-Fi is an American rock band formed in Boston in 1998.[1][2] The band consists of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Stacy Jones, lead guitarist Jamie Arentzen, bassist and backing vocalist Drew Parsons, and drummer Brian Nolan.[3] Prior to the group's formation, Stacy Jones was well known for being a drummer in the successful alternative rock bands Veruca Salt and Letters to Cleo.[2] American Hi-Fi has a close relationship with Miley Cyrus, whose band shares two members with American Hi-Fi.[4] The group has a mixed musical style that includes influences from pop punk, alternative rock, and power pop.[2]

The group released its eponymous debut album in 2001, and this led to their hit single "Flavor of the Weak" and the band was awarded as the "Rising Star" from the Boston Music Awards, 2001. The Art of Losing followed in 2003 with the singles "The Art of Losing" and "The Breakup Song". After this, the group was dropped from their label, Island Records, and moved to Los Angeles to remake their production and sound. Working with veteran music producer Butch Walker, they released Hearts on Parade in 2005. The band then toured to a widespread fan-base in Japan and in the United States.[2] Finally the band came back after five years of interval, releasing their fourth studio album Fight the Frequency in August 2010. The band released their fifth album Blood & Lemonade on September 9, 2014 worldwide via the independent label Rude Records.

American Hi-Fi's released self-titled debut album through Island Records on February 27, 2001 which was produced by Bob Rock (Aerosmith, Metallica). It was an AllMusic 'Album Pick'. Critic Mario Mesquita Borges praised it and stated that "[t]he future of rock & roll is surely guaranteed with acts such as American Hi-Fi." The album reached No. 81 on the Billboard 200 list and No. 1 on the Heatseekers list. The band also achieved a commercial breakthrough through their debut single, "Flavor of the Weak", which ran up the Hot Modern Rock Tracks, the Billboard Hot 100, and other charts followed by Another Perfect Day which peaked 33 in Modern Rock Charts.[6]

Kahului, Hawaii

Kahului is a census-designated place (CDP) on the island of Maui in the U.S. state of Hawaii. It hosts Maui's main airport (Kahului Airport), deep-draft harbor, light industrial areas, and commercial shopping centers. The population was 26,337 at the 2010 census. Kahului is part of the Kahului-Wailuku-Lahaina Metropolitan Statistical Area which includes nearby Wailuku and the town and former whaling village of Lahaina.

The retail center for Maui residents, Kahului has several malls and major stores (including department stores in the Queen Kaahumanu Center); other significant groupings of stores are in Lāhainā such as the Lahaina Cannery Mall, the Happy Valley area of Wailuku, Maui Market Place and Maui Mall, which are both also located in Kahului; and The Shops at Wailea in Wailea.

Kahului is not generally considered a tourist destination. It does feature the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum, Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary, Kanaha Beach County Park, and the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.

Kekaha, Hawaii

Kekaha (literally, "the place" in Hawaiian[1]) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kauaʻi County, Hawaiʻi, United States. The population was 3,537 at the 2010 census,[2] up from 3,175 at the 2000 census.

For most of the 20th century, the Kekaha Sugar Mill (owned by Amfac) was the centerpiece of agriculture on Kauaʻi's west side. The sugar mill had a major influence in Kekaha's development, including banking, employment, transportation, housing and utilities such as water and electricity. The mill employed several generations of local families. It closed in 2000 when the entire sugar industry in Hawaiʻi collapsed. The mill was purchased in 2005 by mainland investors who sold off its heavy machinery to other mills as far away as Africa.

Hawaiʻi's first (and only) train robbery occurred here in February 1920, when a masked gunman stopped a slow-moving sugar train and escaped with the locomotive and $11,000 taken from the labor paymaster on board. Police recovered the money in a swamp near the home of a local fisherman, whose suspicious behavior soon resulted in his arrest and conviction. The fisherman was a big fan of Western movies, and was thought to have been inspired by some of the films he had seen.

Kaumakani, Hawaii

Kaumakani (literally, "place in the wind" in the Hawaiian language[1]) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kauaʻi County, Hawaiʻi, United States. The population was 749 at the 2010 census,[2] up from 607 at the 2000 census.

Kaumakani was officially known as "Makaweli" (which means "fearful features" in the Hawaiian language[3]) for over forty years; Makaweli was an ancient land division (ahupuaʻa).[4] In 1914, the Board on Geographic Names ruled that the community was to be named Makaweli, and only in 1956 did it name the community Kaumakani.[5] It has its own post office, with the ZIP code of 96747.[6]

In 2008, a small settlement to the west at 21°55′59″N 159°38′51″W / 21.93306°N 159.64750°W / 21.93306; -159.64750 (Pakala Village) known as Pakala Village was designated its own CDP,[7] and has its own post office with code 96769.[8][9] Makaweli Landing at Pākala was called "Robinson's Landing", since the family of Aubrey Robinson ran a private ferry to their island of Niʻihau.[10]Pākala means "the sun shines" in Hawaiian.[11]

Pepeekeo, Hawaii

Pepeekeo is located on the east side of the island of Hawaii at 19°50′12″N 155°6′19″W / 19.83667°N 155.10528°W / 19.83667; -155.10528 (19.836537, -155.105293),[2] along Hawaii Route 19. It is 3.5 miles (5.6 km) south of Honomu, 3 miles (5 km) north of Papaikou, and 7 miles (11 km) north of Hilo.

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 1,697 people, 623 households, and 442 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,476.3 people per square mile (569.8/km²). There were 650 housing units at an average density of 565.4 per square mile (218.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 12.61% White, 0.24% African American, 1.00% Native American, 54.68% Asian, 5.13% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 25.40% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.02% of the population.

There were 623 households out of which 29.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.9% were married couples living together, 17.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.20.

Wheeler Army Airfield

Wheeler Army Airfield (IATA: HHI, ICAO: PHHI, FAA LID: HHI), also known as Wheeler Field and formerly as Wheeler Air Force Base, is a United States Army post located in the City & County of Honolulu and in the Wahiawa District of the Island of O'ahu, Hawaii.[4][5] It is a National Historic Landmark for its role in the 7 December 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.[3]

Wheeler AAF comprises approximately 1,389 acres (5.62 km2) of land adjacent to Schofield Barracks and is home to a variety of Department of Defense activities including the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), the 169th Aircraft Control & Warning Squadron (169 ACWS) of the Hawaii Air National Guard, the 193rd Aviation Regiment (Medium Lift), Detachment 55 Operational Support Airlift (Det 55 OSA) of the Hawaii Army National Guard, the Regular Army's 25th Infantry Division's Combat Aviation Brigade, and Trial Defense Service-Hawaii.[6][7]

On 6 February 1922, a detachment of 20 enlisted men from Luke Field, proceeded to Schofield Barracks, under Lieutenant William T. Agee, to clear the flying field on the grounds of the former 17th Cavalry Regiment drill grounds and construct housing for the divisional air service. Two canvas hangars were erected and the field cleared of weeds, guava and algaroba trees. Thus Wheeler Field got its modest start. It was named Wheeler Field on 11 November 1922 in honor of Major Sheldon H. Wheeler, former commander of Luke Field on Ford Island, killed in the crash of DH-4B, AAS Ser. No. 63525 on 13 July 1921.[8]
