Sonogram Tech Job Description

Honomu HI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Honomu HI clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Honomu HI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Honomu HI clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Hawaii or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Honomu HIAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Honomu HI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Honomu home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with every sonography college you are considering, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Honomu HI ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Honomu HI area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Honomu HI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Honomu HI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Honomu health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Hawaii healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Honomu HI residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Honomu HI area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
