Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Kapaa HI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Kapaa HI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Kapaa HI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Kapaa HI clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Hawaii or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Kapaa HIAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Kapaa HI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Kapaa home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are considering, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Kapaa HI ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Kapaa HI area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Kapaa HI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Kapaa HI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Kapaa medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Hawaii healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Kapaa HI home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Kapaa HI area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
