Whitefield, Oklahoma

Whitefield is a town in northwestern Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 391 at the 2010 census,[3] compared with 231 at the 2000 census. It was named for Methodist bishop George Whitefield (1714 - 1770).[4]

Whitefield's history can be traced to the American Civil War, when the Confederate Army established Camp Pike for two thousand Confederate soldiers in 1861. The site was then in Indian Territory and within the boundaries of the Choctaw Nation. The camp was named for Confederate Brigadier General Albert Pike, who had persuaded the Five Civilized Tribes to ally with the Confederacy.[4]

After the end of the Civil War, Camp Pike became a Choctaw trading post. The trading post and the adjacent community were renamed as Oklahoma, Indian Territory. Its clientele were not only members of the Choctaw tribe, but also white settlers who had permits from the tribe to farm land in the Choctaw Nation. Occasionally, it was patronized by white outlaws such as Belle Starr, who were hiding from the law in the mountains of southern Oklahoma.The Post Office wanted to change the name because of confusion with another post office already known as Oklahoma Station. In 1888, the local residents voted to accept Whitfield as the name of the settlement and post office.[4]

Whitesboro, Oklahoma

Whitesboro is a small, unincorporated community located in Le Flore County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1250, as of 2008 United States Census figures. The post office was established April 14, 1902.

Wilburton, Oklahoma

Wilburton is a city in Latimer County, Oklahoma, United States. It is the county seat of Latimer County.[3] The city had a population of 2,843 at the 2010 census, a decline of 4.3 percent from 2,972 in 2000.[4]Robbers Cave State Park is 5 miles (8.0 km) north of Wilburton.[5]

The community now known as Wilburton was originally established as a group of settlers living around Riddle's Station, a stop for the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach along the trail from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Fort Worth, Texas. Riddle's Station was built in 1858 and the Overland Stage operated from 1857 to 1861. According to the Oklahoma Encyclopedia of History and Culture, it was likely named for Will Burton, a contractor and surveyor who was involved in platting the townsite and building the Choctaw Coal and Railway Company line from Wister to McAlester.[5] According to Oklahoma Place Names, it was named after Elisha Wilbur, who was the president of the Lehigh Valley Railroad.[6] The post office was established in 1891.[6]

Initially, the local economy was based on cattle production and shipping. Then, during the 1890s and early 20th century, coal mining became the largest industry. In 1909, the state established the Oklahoma School of Mines and Metallurgy in Wilburton. The school name was later changed to Eastern Oklahoma A&M College, and is now known as Eastern Oklahoma State College.[5]

Willow, Oklahoma

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 114 people, 54 households, and 28 families residing in the town. The population density was 430.7 people per square mile (169.3/km2). There were 66 housing units at an average density of 249.4 per square mile (98.0/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 93.86% White, 5.26% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 12.28% of the population.

There were 54 households out of which 24.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% were married couples living together, 3.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 46.3% were non-families. 44.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 27.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.11 and the average family size was 3.03.

In the town, the population was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 2.6% from 18 to 24, 22.8% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 27.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females, there were 83.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.3 males.

Wayne, Oklahoma

Wayne is a town in McClain County, Oklahoma, United States. Wayne and McClain County are part of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Area The population was 519 according to the 2000 census and is part of the "Heart of Oklahoma" area. Wayne was so named by early railroad workers from Pennsylvania who adopted town names from the railways there, including Wayne, Paoli, Ardmore, and Wynnewood. Wayne is named for Mad Anthony Wayne a United States Army general and statesman. Gen. Wayne earned a reputation in the American Revolutionary War as a war hero. Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt attended school in Wayne, OK in his early years before moving to nearby Norman, OK Stitt, a former Tulsa mortgage banker and business leader, recalled attending Wayne Schools in his inaugural address on January 14,2019 in Oklahoma City, OK

The Town of Wayne, located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 77 and State High 59 gets a large amount of out of town traffic for a small community. The Wayne Municipal Court is held monthly at the Multi-Purpose Center. The Municipal Judge is appointed by the City Council.

Judge Linda Kay McCasland was appointed as Municipal Judge in 1992 and served for 7 years as the first woman judge in McClain County. McCasland had a distinguished career in law as a graduate and active alumnae of the University of Oklahoma College of Law. McCasland worked in law offices in Oklahoma City, Pauls Valley, Purcell, and was a candidate for Associate District Judge in 1994. After selling her law office building in Purcell as well as her Cole area family farm and residential rental properties in Purcell, McCasland moved to sunny Tucson AZ in 2002 and practiced law prior to moving to Miami, Florida in 2010. While on the bench, she was known as a tough but fair judge that would offer a stern lecture to youthful offenders, hoping to keep them out of trouble.

Wilson, Oklahoma

Wilson is a town in Carter County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,724 at the 2010 census.[3] It is part of the Ardmore, Oklahoma Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is home to one of the oldest Assemblies of God churches in Oklahoma, the Wilson Assembly of God Church.

Wilson is located in southwestern Carter County at 34°9′41″N 97°25′30″W / 34.16139°N 97.42500°W / 34.16139; -97.42500 (34.161492, -97.425078).[4]U.S. Highway 70 passes through the city north of the populated center; it leads east 16 miles (26 km) to Ardmore, the Carter County seat, and west 35 miles (56 km) to Waurika.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,584 people, 625 households, and 426 families residing in the city. The population density was 278.3 people per square mile (107.5/km²). There were 785 housing units at an average density of 137.9 per square mile (53.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 89.71% White, 0.25% African American, 6.57% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.44% from other races, and 2.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.83% of the population.

Waynoka, Oklahoma

Waynoka is a city in Woods County, Oklahoma, United States. It is located on U.S. Highway 281 and State Highway 14, seventy miles west of Enid. The population, which peaked at 2018 in 1950, stood at 927 according to the 2010 census.

Founded in what was then known as Indian Territory, Waynoka was established in 1887 when the Southern Kansas Railroad, a subsidiary of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, built a rail line through the area. Shortly thereafter, on April 10, 1888, a post office was established, having the distinction of being the first to be established in the Cherokee Outlet. Its economy was based on the railroad and the large ranches in the area. When the Cherokee Outlet opened up for non-Indian settlement in the land run of September 16, 1893, Waynoka became the area's agricultural trade center.[3]

The Santa Fe Railway made the city a major railroad center when it built Oklahoma's largest rail yard in Waynoka. Ultimatately employing a thousand machinists, boilermakers, sheet metal mechanics, fire builders, car men, switchmen, and engineers, it operated twenty-four hours a day. One of the nation's largest ice plants was built to supply ice for refrigerator cars hauling perishables on Santa Fe's main line from Chicago to Los Angeles. In addition, a roundhouse, maintenance and repair shops, a reading room, a depot, and a Harvey House were built by the railroad. Although the railroad eventually moved its maintenance operations from Waynoka, it continued train crew changes there until 1986. At the turn of the twenty-first century, between fifty and one hundred trains still passed daily through Waynoka on Oklahoma's fastest and busiest rail line.[3]

Wister, Oklahoma

Wister is a town in Le Flore County, Oklahoma, United States. It is part of the Fort Smith, Arkansas-Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,002 at the 2000 census. Wister was named for Gutman G. Wister, an official of the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad (KO&G), and the father of noted writer Owen Wister.[3][4]

Wister is located at 34°58′6″N 94°43′23″W / 34.96833°N 94.72306°W / 34.96833; -94.72306 (34.968411, -94.723191).[5] Wister is 55 miles (89 km) east of McAlester and 20 miles (32 km) west of the Oklahoma-Arkansas border.[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2), of which, 1.4 square miles (3.6 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) of it (2.04%) is water.

Weatherford, Oklahoma

Weatherford is located at 35°32′18″N 98°41′14″W / 35.53833°N 98.68722°W / 35.53833; -98.68722 (35.5384097, -98.6872467). The elevation is 1,634 feet (498 m).[2] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.44 square miles (16.7 km2).[7]

Situated on land made available to homesteaders as part of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Opening on April 19, 1892, Weatherford was incorporated on August 3, 1898, on a townsite location chosen by banking and civic leader Beeks Erick. By 1900, the town's population was 1,017. The town's original post office was located approximately two miles north of town, on William John and Lorinda Powell Weatherford's homestead. Lorinda Weatherford served as its postmaster and namesake. In its early years, farming and ranching provided the major economic base, with corn, cotton, and maize the major crops. Additionally, a brick plant, a cement plant, and a broom factory provided jobs as well as supplies for early residents.[8]

As of the census[5] of 2015, there were 12,126 people, 3,991 households, and 2,187 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,699.3 people per square mile (656.3/km²). There were 4,468 housing units at an average density of 770.1 per square mile (297.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 73.7% White, 4.9% African American, 2.3% Native American, 1.4% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.76% from other races, and 6.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.8% of the population.

Woodward, Oklahoma

The area was historically occupied by the Kiowa, Comanche, Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes.[4] European-American settlers established the town in 1887 after construction of the railroad to that point for shipping cattle to markets. The town was on the Great Western Cattle Trail. In the 19th century, it was one of the most important depots in the Oklahoma Territory for shipping cattle to the East. As an important cattle town, it had the rough frontier bawdiness of the time.[5] The United States opened up much of the area to European-American settlement by the Land Run of 1893, and migrants rushed into the area.

Boiling Springs State Park, named for its artesian springs that seem to boil, has been established east of the city. Federal dockets were held annually in November through 1948, and sporadically at need after that.

For thousands of years, succeeding cultures of indigenous peoples inhabited the areas along the North Canadian River. The Plains tribes adopted use of the horse from the Spanish settlers in the 17th and 18th centuries, which greatly increased their range of nomadic hunting. Before the American Civil War, the historic Plains tribes of the Kiowa, Comanche, Apache, Cheyenne, and Arapaho occupied this area.[4]
