Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Meeker OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Meeker OK hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Meeker OK ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Meeker OK clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Oklahoma or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Meeker OKAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Meeker OK hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Meeker home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography program you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Meeker OK ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Meeker OK area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Meeker OK health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have associations with Meeker OK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Meeker healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Meeker OK home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Meeker OK area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
