Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Bartlesville OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Bartlesville OK clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Bartlesville OK ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Bartlesville OK hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Oklahoma or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Bartlesville OKAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Bartlesville OK outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Bartlesville home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography college you are reviewing, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Bartlesville OK ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bartlesville OK area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Bartlesville OK health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Bartlesville OK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Bartlesville medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Bartlesville OK residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Bartlesville OK area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
