Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Avant OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Avant OK clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Avant OK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Avant OK clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Oklahoma or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Avant OKAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Avant OK outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Avant home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Avant OK ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Avant OK area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Avant OK health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have associations with Avant OK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Avant health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Avant OK residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Avant OK area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
