Whiteville, Tennessee

Whiteville is a town in Hardeman County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,148 at the 2000 census and 4,638 at the 2010 census,[7] showing an increase of 1,490. Whiteville is the location of two privately owned prisons, Whiteville Correctional Facility and Hardeman County Correctional Center.

Whiteville is located in northwestern Hardeman County at 35°19′28″N 89°8′45″W / 35.32444°N 89.14583°W / 35.32444; -89.14583 (35.324496, −89.145721).[8]U.S. Route 64 runs through the southern part of the town, leading southeast 11 miles (18 km) to Bolivar, the county seat, and southwest 13 miles (21 km) to Somerville. Tennessee State Route 100 runs east from Whiteville 30 miles (48 km) to Henderson. State Route 179 runs north from the center of Whiteville 15 miles (24 km) to Interstate 40 at Willis.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Whiteville has a total area of 2.7 square miles (7.1 km2), all land.[7] The town is drained by the headwaters of Hickory Creek, which flows north to the Hatchie River.

Tennessee State Route 262

SR 262 begins in Macon County as a secondary highway at an intersection with SR 52 just east of Lafayette. It turns southeastward towards Willette crossing SR 56 and SR 80. It runs concurrently with SR 56 from Gidds Crossroads to near Goose Horn. SR 262 enters Jackson County close to the point where Macon and Jackson counties meet Smith County, but falls short of the Smith County line.

SR 262 continues southeastward, and then runs concurrently with SR 85 for a short distance from Highland to Rough Point. SR 262 then becomes a primary highway and goes southeast to cross the Cumberland River and end on the west side of Gainesboro at a junction with SR 53.[1]

Whitwell, Tennessee

Whitwell is a city in Marion County, Tennessee, United States, approximately 24 miles northwest of Chattanooga. The population was 1,699 at the 2010 census.[4] It is part of the Chattanooga, TN–GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The town that became Whitwell was originally known as Cheekville, but renamed "Whitwell" for Thomas Whitwell, a British metallurgist, inventor and co-founder of the Southern States Coal, Iron and Land Company, who was killed in an accident in his own ironworks in Thornaby in 1878[6][7][8][9]. Whitwell was incorporated as a city in 1956, having grown as a mining town due to the abundance of coal in the mountains near the town. In 1981 there was a major mining accident when 13 coal miners were killed in an explosion. A full list of the names of those killed in the mine explosion is on a monument at Whitwell High School. Whitwell also has an annual Labor Day celebration that has been celebrated for over 50 consecutive years.[10]

Whitwell is located at 35°11′51″N 85°31′9″W / 35.19750°N 85.51917°W / 35.19750; -85.51917 (35.197570, -85.519082).[11] It is situated in the southwestern Sequatchie Valley at the base of a relatively steep escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau. The Sequatchie River passes just east of the city, and forms a portion of its southeastern boundary.

Nutbush, Tennessee

Nutbush is a rural unincorporated community in Haywood County, Tennessee, in the western part of the state.[1] It was established in the early 19th century by European-American settlers who brought along or bought enslaved African Americans as workers to develop the area's cotton plantations. The African Americans built houses and churches that still stand.

Agriculture is still the most important element of the rural economy, focused on the cultivation and processing of cotton. This has been the commodity crop since the antebellum years, when its cultivation depended on slave labor. As of 2006, cotton was processed in one cotton-processing plant in the community.

Nutbush is best known as the birthplace and childhood home of singer Tina Turner, who described the town in her 1973 song "Nutbush City Limits". In 2002, a segment of Tennessee State Route 19 near Nutbush was named "Tina Turner Highway" in her honor.[3][4][5] This is also the home town of blues pioneer musicians and recording artists Hambone Willie Newbern and Sleepy John Estes.[6]

Henderson County, Tennessee

Henderson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2010 census, the population was 27,769.[1] Its county seat is Lexington.[2] The county was founded in 1821 and named for James Henderson, a soldier in the War of 1812.[3]

Henderson County was established in 1821; it was named for Lt. Colonel James Henderson,[4] Jr. (1775-1814), of the Tennessee State Militia, who was killed in late December 1814 below New Orleans during a clash with the British Army. Henderson is said to have served in earlier conflicts such as the Creek Indian war, which took place during the same overall time period as the War of 1812.

After the Battle of New Orleans, Major General William Carroll's Tennessee brigade, which was the largest single force under General Andrew Jackson's command in Louisiana, established their outgoing camp upriver from New Orleans and named it Camp Henderson.

Corryton, Tennessee

Corryton is an unincorporated community in northeastern Knox County, Tennessee, United States, about 15 miles northeast of Knoxville. The United States Geographic Names System classifies Corryton as a populated place.[1] It is included in the Knoxville, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Corryton Zip Code also encompasses the adjacent community of Gibbs (sometimes known as Harbisons Crossroads).

Corryton is situated near two mountains, House Mountain (the highest point in Knox County)[2] and Clinch Mountain. It includes a grade school, a public library, community center, and several churches including Little Flat Creek Baptist Church (founded in 1797, making it the first Baptist church organized in Knox County), Corryton Church (formerly Corryton Baptist) and Rutherford Memorial United Methodist.

John Sawyers, a Revolutionary War veteran, settled in the vicinity of what is now Corryton in 1785. He subsequently built a small fort along the Emory Road. The community remained primarily agricultural until the construction of the Knoxville, Cumberland Gap and Louisville Railroad through the area in the late 1880s. The rail station that served the community was initially known as "Floyd." In 1887, an entrepreneur named Corryton Woodbury purchased the station and adjacent lands, and laid out lots in hopes of establishing a new town, which he named after himself. The lots failed to sell, however, and the venture was unsuccessful.[3]

Williston, Tennessee

Williston is located south of the center of Fayette County at 35°9′32″N 89°22′24″W / 35.15889°N 89.37333°W / 35.15889; -89.37333 (35.158955, -89.373328).[7] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.2 km2), all land.[6]

The city is located along Tennessee State Routes 76 and 193. TN 76 leads north 6 miles (10 km) to Somerville, the county seat, and south 7 miles (11 km) to Moscow. TN 193 leads west 7 miles (11 km) to Macon and 15 miles (24 km) to the Memphis outer beltway.

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 341 people, 122 households, and 91 families residing in the city. The population density was 210.7 people per square mile (81.3/km²). There were 129 housing units at an average density of 79.7 per square mile (30.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 64.81% White, 33.43% African American, 0.59% Asian, 0.59% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.29% of the population.

Winchester, Tennessee

Winchester was created as the seat of justice for Franklin County by act of the Tennessee Legislature on November 22, 1809, and was laid out the following year.[1] The town is named for James Winchester, a soldier in the American Revolution, first Speaker of the Tennessee Legislature, and a brigadier general in the War of 1812.

Mary Sharp College (originally the "Tennessee and Alabama Female Institute", but later renamed in honor of Mary Corn Sharp, a donor) was founded in 1851 by Dr. Z. C. Graves and the Baptist Church. Though a women's college, it offered a classical curriculum based upon what was being offered at the time by Amherst College, Brown University, and the University of Virginia. It closed in 1896.[1] During the 19th century, the institution helped make Winchester an educational center. Other private schools in the city were Carrick Academy for male students (founded in 1809), Winchester Female Academy (founded in 1835), and Winchester Normal College.[8][9]

The city was occupied first by Confederate and then by Union troops during the Civil War. Winchester, along with the rest of Franklin County, seceded from the Union several months before the rest of Tennessee, unofficially becoming a part of Alabama until the rest of the state seceded. It lay on the line of retreat to Chattanooga followed by the Confederate Army of Tennessee during the campaign of 1863.

Winfield, Tennessee

Winfield is a town in Scott County, Tennessee, United States. Originally named Chitwood in the late 18th century for Revolutionary War hero Captain James Chitwood after his family settled the area extensively, the name was changed following the Civil War due to the family's mixed allegiances. The population was 911 at the 2000 census and 967 at the 2010 census.

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 911 people, 356 households, and 259 families residing in the town. The population density was 143.2 people per square mile (55.3/km²). There were 380 housing units at an average density of 59.7 per square mile (23.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.13% White, 0.99% Native American, 0.11% Asian, and 0.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.33% of the population.

There were 356 households out of which 34.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% were married couples living together, 13.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.97.

Woodbury, Tennessee

Woodbury is a town in Cannon County, Tennessee, United States. Woodbury is part of the Nashville Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located 55 miles (89 km) southeast of downtown Nashville. The population of Woodbury was 2,680 at the 2010 census.[7] It is the county seat of Cannon County.[8]

Woodbury is a small town located near the center of Cannon County at 35°49′25″N 86°4′13″W / 35.82361°N 86.07028°W / 35.82361; -86.07028 (35.823644, -86.070268).[9] It is in the valley of the East Fork of the Stones River, part of the Cumberland River watershed flowing through Nashville.

U.S. Route 70S passes through the town, leading west 19 miles (31 km) to Murfreesboro and southeast 20 miles (32 km) to McMinnville. Tennessee State Route 53 leads south from Woodbury 24 miles (39 km) to Manchester and north 16 miles (26 km) to Liberty. From the west side of Woodbury, Tennessee State Route 145 leads north 10 miles (16 km) to Auburntown.
