Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Rutherford TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Rutherford TN hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Rutherford TN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through Rutherford TN clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Rutherford TNAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Rutherford TN hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Rutherford home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any sonography school you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Rutherford TN ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Rutherford TN area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Rutherford TN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Rutherford TN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Rutherford medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Rutherford TN home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Rutherford TN area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
