Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Gallatin TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Gallatin TN hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Gallatin TN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up with Gallatin TN clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Tennessee or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Gallatin TNAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Gallatin TN hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Gallatin home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Gallatin TN ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Gallatin TN area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Gallatin TN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Gallatin TN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Gallatin medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Gallatin TN home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Gallatin TN area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
