Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Fairview TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Fairview TN hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Fairview TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Fairview TN hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Tennessee or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Fairview TNAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Fairview TN outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Fairview home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Fairview TN ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Fairview TN area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Fairview TN employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with Fairview TN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Fairview health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Fairview TN residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Fairview TN area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
