Sonogram Tech Job Description

Springfield TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Springfield TN clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Springfield TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Springfield TN hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Tennessee or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Springfield TNAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Springfield TN outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Springfield home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer program you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Springfield TN ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Springfield TN area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Springfield TN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Springfield TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Springfield health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Springfield TN home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Springfield TN area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
