Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Oliver Springs TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Oliver Springs TN hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Oliver Springs TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Oliver Springs TN hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Oliver Springs TNAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Oliver Springs TN hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Oliver Springs home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Oliver Springs TN ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Oliver Springs TN area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Oliver Springs TN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Oliver Springs TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Oliver Springs medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Oliver Springs TN home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Oliver Springs TN area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

    Oliver Springs, Tennessee

Oliver Springs is a town in Anderson, Morgan, and Roane counties in the U.S. state of Tennessee. Its population was 3,231 at the 2010 census.[6] It is included in the Harriman, Tennessee Micropolitan Statistical Area, which consists of Roane County. Oliver Springs is also the hometown of American Idol contestant Janelle Arthur and 2010 Tony Award winner Levi Kreis.

Before that time, the area around Oliver Springs had been used by Native Americans as a hunting ground and campsite. Natural mineral springs and abundant wildlife on Windrock Mountain encouraged Native Americans to stay. The springs, whose reputation for miraculous medicinal properties lasted until the 20th century, were called Tah-hah-lehaha, which meant "healing waters" in the Cherokee language.

The land remained unexplored by European settlers until 1761. At this time, a long hunting expedition led by Elisha Walden explored much of the Clinch and Powell River valleys. However, settlement in the area did not begin in earnest until the 1790s, and growth remained slow.
