Hollow Rock TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Hollow Rock TN clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Hollow Rock TN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Hollow Rock TN clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Tennessee or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Hollow Rock TNAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Hollow Rock TN hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Hollow Rock home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with any sonography school you are looking at, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Hollow Rock TN ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Hollow Rock TN area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Hollow Rock TN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with Hollow Rock TN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Hollow Rock healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Hollow Rock TN home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hollow Rock TN area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
