Calpine CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Calpine CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Calpine CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Calpine CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Calpine CAAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Calpine CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Calpine home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Calpine CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Calpine CA area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Calpine CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Calpine CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Calpine medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Calpine CA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Calpine CA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
