Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Dinuba CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Dinuba CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Dinuba CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize through Dinuba CA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Dinuba CAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Dinuba CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Dinuba home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with every sonography college you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Dinuba CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Dinuba CA area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Dinuba CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have associations with Dinuba CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Dinuba medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Dinuba CA home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Dinuba CA area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
