Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Dickerson Run PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Dickerson Run PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Dickerson Run PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Dickerson Run PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Dickerson Run PAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Dickerson Run PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Dickerson Run home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Dickerson Run PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Dickerson Run PA area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Dickerson Run PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have associations with Dickerson Run PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Dickerson Run medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Dickerson Run PA residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dickerson Run PA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    1983 Los Angeles Rams season

The 1983 Los Angeles Rams season was the team's 46th year with the National Football League and the 38th season in the city of Los Angeles. The franchise drafted a future Hall of Fame Running Back in Eric Dickerson. The season saw the team attempt to improve on its 2-7 record from 1982. The team started out 5-2 before splitting their next 4 games and then lost at home to Washington to sit at 7-5. They would split their last 4 games to finish 9-7 and make the playoffs for the first time since 1980 after a 2-year absence. In the playoffs, they defeated the Cowboys 24-17 in Dallas to advance to the Divisional Round. However, in the game, the Rams were annihilated 51-7 by the Redskins, who would move on to the Super Bowl later, only to lose to the Los Angeles Raiders, 38-9.

While he considered going to the Los Angeles Express in the United States Football League, Dickerson decided to go into the National Football League at the advice of his mother because the NFL had been around longer. He was selected second overall in the 1983 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. An immediate pro success, he established rookie records for most rushing attempts (390), most rushing yards gained (1,808) and most touchdowns rushing (18), including another two receiving touchdowns.[3] His efforts earned him All-Pro, Pro Bowl, Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors.[4]
