Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Harvey LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Harvey LA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Harvey LA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Harvey LA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Louisiana or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Harvey LAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Harvey LA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Harvey home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonography school you are reviewing, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Harvey LA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Harvey LA area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Harvey LA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Harvey LA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Harvey health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Harvey LA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Harvey LA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
