Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Wister OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Wister OK clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Wister OK ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Wister OK hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Oklahoma or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Wister OKAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Wister OK outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Wister home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are looking at, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Wister OK ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Wister OK area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Wister OK health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Wister OK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Wister health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Wister OK home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Wister OK area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
