Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Mentone CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Mentone CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Mentone CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Mentone CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Mentone CAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Mentone CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Mentone home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Mentone CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Mentone CA area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Mentone CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Mentone CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Mentone medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Mentone CA home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Mentone CA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
