Sonographer Job Description

Fairbank PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Fairbank PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Fairbank PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Fairbank PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Fairbank PAAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Fairbank PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Fairbank home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are considering, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Fairbank PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Fairbank PA area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Fairbank PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Fairbank PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Fairbank health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Fairbank PA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Fairbank PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia

Fairbank's disease or multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) is a rare genetic disorder (dominant form: 1 in 10,000 births) that affects the growing ends of bones. Long bones normally elongate by expansion of cartilage in the growth plate (epiphyseal plate) near their ends. As it expands outward from the growth plate, the cartilage mineralizes and hardens to become bone (ossification). In MED, this process is defective.

Children with autosomal dominant MED experience joint pain and fatigue after exercising. Their x-rays show small and irregular ossifications centers, most apparent in the hips and knees. There are very small capital femoral epiphyses and hypoplastic, poorly formed acetabular roofs.[1] A waddling gait may develop. Knees have metaphyseal widening and irregularity while hands have brachydactyly (short fingers) and proximal metacarpal rounding. Flat feet are very common.[2] The spine is normal but may have a few irregularities, such as scoliosis.

By adulthood, people with MED are of short stature or in the low range of normal and have short limbs relative to their trunks. Frequently, movement becomes limited at the major joints, especially at the elbows and hips. However, loose knee and finger joints can occur. Signs of osteoarthritis usually begin in early adulthood.[3]
