Holmes PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Holmes PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Holmes PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Holmes PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Holmes PAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Holmes PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Holmes home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, check that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Holmes PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Holmes PA area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Holmes PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Holmes PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Holmes medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Holmes PA home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Holmes PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    H. H. Holmes

Herman Webster Mudgett (May 16, 1861 – May 7, 1896), better known as Dr. Henry Howard Holmes, or more commonly, as H. H. Holmes, was an American serial killer.[1] While he confessed to 27 murders,[2] only nine could be plausibly confirmed and several of the people he claimed to have murdered were still alive. He is said to have killed as many as 200, though this figure is only traceable to 1940s pulp magazines.[3] Many victims were said to have been killed in a mixed-use building which he owned, located about 3 miles (5 km) west of the 1893 World's Fair: Columbian Exposition, supposedly called the World's Fair Hotel (informally called "The Murder Hotel"), though evidence suggests the hotel portion was never truly open for business.[3]

Besides being a serial killer, Holmes was also a con artist and a bigamist, the subject of more than 50 lawsuits in Chicago alone. Many now-common stories of his crimes sprang from fictional accounts that later authors assumed to be factual. In a 2017 biography, Adam Selzer wrote that Holmes' story is "effectively a new American tall tale – and, like all the best tall tales, it sprang from a kernel of truth".[3]

    H. H. Holmes was executed on May 7, 1896, nine days before his 35th birthday, for the murder of his friend and accomplice Benjamin Pitezel. During his trial for the murder of Pitezel, Holmes confessed to many other killings.[4]
