Sonogram Tech Job Description

Nesquehoning PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Nesquehoning PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Nesquehoning PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Nesquehoning PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Nesquehoning PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Nesquehoning PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Nesquehoning home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Nesquehoning PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Nesquehoning PA area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Nesquehoning PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have partnerships with Nesquehoning PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Nesquehoning healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Nesquehoning PA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Nesquehoning PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
