Sonographer Occupation Summary

New Hope PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in New Hope PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

New Hope PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with New Hope PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in New Hope PAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local New Hope PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your New Hope home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are reviewing, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous New Hope PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with New Hope PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the New Hope healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their New Hope PA home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the New Hope PA area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    New Hope, Pennsylvania

New Hope is a borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,528 at the 2010 census. New Hope is located approximately 30 mi (48 km) north of Philadelphia, and lies on the west bank of the Delaware River at its confluence with Aquetong Creek. The two-lane New Hope – Lambertville Bridge carries automobile and foot traffic across the Delaware to Lambertville, New Jersey on the east bank.

New Hope is located along the route of the Old York Road, the former main highway between Philadelphia and New York City. It was generally regarded as the halfway point, where travelers would stay overnight and be ferried across the Delaware River the next morning. The section of U.S. Route 202 that passes just north of New Hope is still named York Road, and the original route is now known as Bridge Street (PA 179).

New Hope was first called "Coryell's Ferry", after the owner of the ferry business. The current name came into use following a fire in 1790 that destroyed several mills in the area; their reconstruction was considered a "new hope"
