Sonographer Occupation Summary

Reedsville PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Reedsville PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Reedsville PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Reedsville PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Reedsville PAAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Reedsville PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Reedsville home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Reedsville PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Reedsville PA area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Reedsville PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Reedsville PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Reedsville medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Reedsville PA home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Reedsville PA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
