Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Levelock AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Levelock AK hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Levelock AK ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Levelock AK hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Alaska or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Levelock AKAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Levelock AK outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Levelock home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Levelock AK ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Levelock AK area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Levelock AK employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have associations with Levelock AK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Levelock healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Levelock AK home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Levelock AK area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
