New River AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in New River AZ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

New River AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with New River AZ clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Arizona or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in New River AZAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local New River AZ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your New River home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask New River AZ ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the New River AZ area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous New River AZ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with New River AZ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the New River medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their New River AZ home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the New River AZ area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
