Payson AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Payson AZ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Payson AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Payson AZ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Arizona or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Payson AZAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Payson AZ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Payson home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Payson AZ ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Payson AZ area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Payson AZ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Payson AZ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Payson medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Payson AZ residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Payson AZ area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
