Sonogram Tech Job Description

Miramonte CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Miramonte CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Miramonte CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize through Miramonte CA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Miramonte CAAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Miramonte CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Miramonte home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with every sonographer program you are considering, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Miramonte CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Miramonte CA area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Miramonte CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Miramonte CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Miramonte healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Miramonte CA home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Miramonte CA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
