So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program so that you can evaluate and compare your choices. But exactly where does one start? Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Lewis CO ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Lewis CO clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Lewis CO ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Lewis CO clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Colorado or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Lewis COAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Lewis CO hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Lewis home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Lewis CO ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Lewis CO area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Lewis CO health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Lewis CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Lewis health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Lewis CO home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Lewis CO area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Lewis & Co

Born in London in 1833, the son of Thomas Archdeacon Lewis (1780-1862), a secretary to Charles Blomfield, Bishop of London. Although trained as an architect, Lewis founded a firm of organ builders with John Tunstall and John Whitacker in about 1860. In 1866, the firm moved into premises in Shepherds Lane (now Ferndale Road), Brixton. Under Lewis's direction, the firm built instruments ranging from small chamber organs to major cathedral and concert organs. Lewis was strongly inspired by the organs built in Germany by Edmund Schulze and in France by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. He was renowned for instruments that had a bright, vibrant tone.[2] Lewis left the firm before 1900, but it continued to maintain the standards set by its founder. In 1919, there was a merger with Henry Willis & Sons who moved into the Brixton works and traded as Henry Willis and Son and Lewis and Company Ltd until 1925 when the Lewis name was dropped. T. C. Lewis continued to build organs for some time after leaving the firm that he had founded.[3]

Pre 1886 Lewis & Co had a well respected foreman working for them, who worked on many of the lewis organs, called George Henry Adams (1843 - 1932). George had previously worked for around 20yrs with j w walker. A man called Thynne was dismissed (most likely) from Lewis's in 1881 and when he and Michell set up their short-lived company they managed to pinch a good number of Lewis staff including his foreman George Adams. George in 1886 established Adams & Marshall and by 1888 he was head of his own company Adams & Son who also work out of Brixton. one of Adams & son surviving organ can be found in east Farleigh church Kent which has a preservation order on it. [advertising pamphlet which is located in Kent archives and a copy held by direct descendent gives details of him having worked with lewis] http://www.npor.org.uk/NPORView.html?DBOB
