North Windham CT sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near North Windham CT, it’s time to start the procedure of selecting a school. To begin with, you must find the ideal program that will provide the appropriate training to become a qualified professional. And because some states do require that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s very important that you investigate each program in order to assess and compare your options. But just where does one start? A number of individuals will start by searching for schools that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost should be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other important factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internships. These and additional qualifications will be covered more in depth later in this post. Sonogram Tech Job Description

North Windham CT ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in North Windham CT clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

North Windham CT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with North Windham CT hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Connecticut or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in North Windham CTAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local North Windham CT outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your North Windham home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonography school you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask North Windham CT ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the North Windham CT area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous North Windham CT employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with North Windham CT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the North Windham healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their North Windham CT home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the North Windham CT area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
