Sonographer Job Summary

Pawcatuck CT ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Pawcatuck CT clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Pawcatuck CT ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Pawcatuck CT hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Connecticut or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Pawcatuck CTAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Pawcatuck CT outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Pawcatuck home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are looking at, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Pawcatuck CT ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Pawcatuck CT area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Pawcatuck CT health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have associations with Pawcatuck CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Pawcatuck medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Pawcatuck CT residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Pawcatuck CT area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
