Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Redding CT ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Redding CT clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Redding CT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Redding CT clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Connecticut or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Redding CTAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Redding CT outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Redding home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Redding CT ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Redding CT area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Redding CT employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have partnerships with Redding CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Redding health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Redding CT home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Redding CT area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Redding, Connecticut

At the time colonials began receiving grants for land within the boundaries of present-day Redding, Native American trails crossed through portions of the area, including the Berkshire Path running north-south.[2]

In 1639, Roger Ludlow (also referenced as Roger Ludlowe in many accounts) purchased land from local Native Americans to establish Fairfield,[3] and in 1668 Fairfield purchased another tract of land then called Northfield, which comprised land that is now part of Redding.[4]

For settlement purposes, Fairfield authorities divided the newly available land into parcels dubbed "long lots" at the time, which north-south measured no more than a third of a mile wide but extended east-west as long as 15 miles.[5] Immediately north of the long lots was a similar-sized parcel of land known as The Oblong.[6]
