Bascom FL sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Bascom FL, the next step is to start the process of selecting a college. To begin with, you must find the right program that will furnish the proper training to become a skilled professional. And given that a number of states do require that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s very important that you research each program so that you can evaluate and compare your options. But exactly where does one begin? A number of students will start by looking for colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost should be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other important factors as well. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internship programs. These and additional qualifications will be discussed more in depth later in this article. But to start with, let’s go over what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online training programs that are available.

Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Bascom FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Bascom FL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Bascom FL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Bascom FL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Florida or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Bascom FLAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Bascom FL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Bascom home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Bascom FL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Bascom FL area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Bascom FL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Bascom FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Bascom medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Bascom FL residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bascom FL area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
