Sonographer Work Description

Hilliard FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Hilliard FL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Hilliard FL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Hilliard FL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Florida or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Hilliard FL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Hilliard home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography school you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Hilliard FL area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Hilliard FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Hilliard FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Hilliard medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Hilliard FL home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Hilliard FL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
