Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Holmes Beach FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Holmes Beach FL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Holmes Beach FL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Holmes Beach FL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Holmes Beach FLAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Holmes Beach FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Holmes Beach home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Holmes Beach FL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Holmes Beach FL area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Holmes Beach FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Holmes Beach FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Holmes Beach healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Holmes Beach FL home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Holmes Beach FL area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
