Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Key Largo FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Key Largo FL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Key Largo FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Key Largo FL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Key Largo FLAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Key Largo FL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Key Largo home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Key Largo FL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Key Largo FL area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Key Largo FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Key Largo FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Key Largo health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Key Largo FL residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Key Largo FL area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Key Largo

Key Largo (Spanish: Cayo Largo) is an island in the upper Florida Keys archipelago and is the largest section of the Keys, at 33 miles (53 km) long. It is one of the northernmost of the Florida Keys in Monroe County, and the northernmost of the Keys connected by U.S. Highway 1 (the Overseas Highway). Its earlier Spanish name was Cayo Largo,[1] meaning long islet.

Key Largo is connected to the mainland in Miami-Dade County by two routes. The first route is The Overseas Highway, which is U.S. Highway 1 that enters Key Largo at Jewfish Creek near the middle of the island and turns southwest. The second route is Card Sound Road, which connects to the northern part of Key Largo at Card Sound Bridge and runs southeastward to connect with County Road 905, which runs southwest and joins U.S. 1 at about mile marker 106. These routes originate at Florida City on the mainland.

Key Largo is a popular tourist destination and calls itself the "Diving Capital of the World" because the living coral reef a few miles offshore attracts thousands of scuba divers and sport-fishing enthusiasts.[2]
