Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Lacoochee FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Lacoochee FL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Lacoochee FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Lacoochee FL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Lacoochee FLAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Lacoochee FL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Lacoochee home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonography college you are looking at, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Lacoochee FL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Lacoochee FL area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Lacoochee FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have relationships with Lacoochee FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Lacoochee health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Lacoochee FL residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lacoochee FL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
