Sonographer Work Description

Micanopy FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Micanopy FL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Micanopy FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Micanopy FL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Micanopy FLAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Micanopy FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Micanopy home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Micanopy FL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Micanopy FL area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Micanopy FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Micanopy FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Micanopy medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Micanopy FL home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Micanopy FL area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Micanopy, Florida

Micanopy (/ˌmɪkəˈnoʊpi/ MIK-ə-NOH-pee) is a town in Alachua County, Florida, United States, located south of Gainesville. The population as of the 2010 census was 600.[5] The oldest community in the interior of Florida that has been continually inhabited,[6] it has a downtown that is designated as a historic district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It contains a number of antique stores, as well as several restaurants. It is also known for being the filming location of the 1991 romantic comedy, Doc Hollywood.

In 1539 Spanish conquistador and explorer Hernando De Soto noted a Timucuan Indian village here. Over two hundred years later, the American naturalist William Bartram recorded his impressions of a proto-Seminole village named Cuscowilla in this same locale.

By the time Spain ceded its Florida provinces to the U.S. in 1821, the newly constructed hamlet of Micanopy became the first distinct United States town in the Florida Territory. One of the founders was Moses Elias Levy, a wealthy businessman and philanthropist who was involved in West Indies shipping and other interests. He immigrated to the United States in 1820.[7]
