Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Minneola FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Minneola FL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Minneola FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Minneola FL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Florida or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Minneola FLAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Minneola FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Minneola home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography program you are considering, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Minneola FL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Minneola FL area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Minneola FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Minneola FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Minneola medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Minneola FL residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Minneola FL area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
