Sonographer Work Description

Montverde FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Montverde FL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Montverde FL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Montverde FL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Florida or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Montverde FLAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Montverde FL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Montverde home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are considering, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Montverde FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Montverde FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Montverde health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Montverde FL residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Montverde FL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
