Sonographer Work Description

Reddick FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Reddick FL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Reddick FL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Reddick FL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Florida or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Reddick FLAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Reddick FL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Reddick home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with every sonographer program you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Reddick FL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Reddick FL area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Reddick FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Reddick FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Reddick healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Reddick FL home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Reddick FL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
