Sonographer Work Summary

Berlin GA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Berlin GA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Berlin GA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Berlin GA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Georgia or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Berlin GAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Berlin GA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Berlin home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Berlin GA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Berlin GA area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Berlin GA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Berlin GA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Berlin health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Berlin GA home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Berlin GA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
