Clarkston GA sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Clarkston GA, the next step is to begin the procedure of picking a college. First, you have to find the ideal program that will provide the necessary education to become a skilled professional. And given that a number of states do require that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each college in order to evaluate and compare your options. But exactly where does one begin? Most individuals will start by looking for schools that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost should be considered when making a decision, but there are other critical factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internships. These and other qualifiers will be addressed more in detail later in this post. Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Clarkston GA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Clarkston GA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Clarkston GA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Clarkston GA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Georgia or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Clarkston GAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Clarkston GA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Clarkston home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every sonographer program you are looking at, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Clarkston GA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Clarkston GA area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Clarkston GA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Clarkston GA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Clarkston medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Clarkston GA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Clarkston GA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

    Clarkston, Georgia

Clarkston is a city in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 12,742 as of 2016.[5] The Clarkston Campus of Georgia State University's Perimeter College is just south of the city limits.

The city is noted for its ethnic diversity, and is often referred to as "the most diverse square mile in America" and "the Ellis Island of the South." In the 1990s, refugee resettlement programs identified Clarkston as a good fit for displaced persons of many backgrounds. The rental market was open, residents were moving farther out from the Atlanta urban core, and Clarkston was the last stop on a transit line into the city. By the 2000s the local high school had students from more than 50 countries; a local mosque had 800 worshipers; and by some estimates, half the population was from outside the U.S.

A post office called Clarkston has been in operation since 1876.[6] The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the place in 1882 as the "Town of Clarkston", with municipal corporate limits extending in a one-half mile radius from the Georgia Railroad depot.[7] The community was named after W. W. Clark, a railroad official.[8]
