Cochran GA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Cochran GA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Cochran GA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Cochran GA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Georgia or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Cochran GAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Cochran GA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Cochran home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are considering, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Cochran GA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Cochran GA area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Cochran GA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Cochran GA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Cochran medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Cochran GA home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cochran GA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
