Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Jasper GA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Jasper GA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Jasper GA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Jasper GA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Georgia or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Jasper GAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Jasper GA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Jasper home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Jasper GA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Jasper GA area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Jasper GA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Jasper GA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Jasper healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Jasper GA residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Jasper GA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
