Sonographer Work Summary

Pinehurst GA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Pinehurst GA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Pinehurst GA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Pinehurst GA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Georgia or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Pinehurst GAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Pinehurst GA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Pinehurst home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Pinehurst GA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Pinehurst GA area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Pinehurst GA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Pinehurst GA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Pinehurst health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Pinehurst GA residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Pinehurst GA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
