Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Bellwood IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Bellwood IL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Bellwood IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Bellwood IL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Illinois or whatever state you decide to work in.

student attending online sonography class in Bellwood ILAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bellwood IL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Bellwood home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are looking at, check that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Bellwood IL area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Bellwood IL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with Bellwood IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Bellwood IL residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bellwood IL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
