Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Chadwick IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Chadwick IL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Chadwick IL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Chadwick IL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Illinois or whichever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Chadwick ILAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Chadwick IL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Chadwick home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonography college you are reviewing, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Chadwick IL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Chadwick IL area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Chadwick IL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Chadwick IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Chadwick medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Chadwick IL home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Chadwick IL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
