One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Grand Chain IL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Grand Chain IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Grand Chain health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Grand Chain IL home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Grand Chain IL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
